Trek4Kidz was started in 1997 by a small band of like-minded people from Tuross Head on the far south coast of NSW, who decided to organize an event that would not only help change the lives of seriously ill children, but would provide a social event for people who share the drive and ambition for charity work & a keen interest in exploring the great Australian countryside and meeting the many characters our country boasts.
The organisation is unique, in that 100% of funds that are raised go directly to the Starlight Children’s Foundation. Most other treks take some money from the donations to cover administration costs. In our case, each trekker pays an amount of money each year, which not only covers the costs of accommodation and meals for the week we are away, but also covers those few administration costs.
Trek4Kidz is an annual week-long event where a group explores different regional areas of the Australian countryside by car. Since its inception the Trek has visited more than 470 towns, 55 schools and raised over $2,254,190 for the Starlight Children’s Foundation.
These funds would enable Starlight to grant hundreds of life-changing wishes or transform the hospital experience for thousands of sick children at hospitals around Australia.

About The Starlight Children’s Foundation
Two decades of children’s laughter
Since being formed as an Australian children’s charity in 1988, the Starlight Children’s Foundation has brightened the lives of seriously ill and hospitalised children, and their families, throughout Australia.
Living with illness or injury can cause enormous strain in the lives of children and their families. The pain, loneliness and isolation that sick children feel dominates their lives, and they often miss out on normal experiences that healthy children take for granted.
Starlight provides programs integral to the total care of seriously ill children – while health professionals focus on treating the illness, Starlight is there to lift the spirits of the child, giving them the opportunity to laugh, play and be a child again.
Brightening lives since 1988
For two decades, Starlight has brightened the lives of seriously ill and hospitalised children, young people and their families, throughout Australia.
Starlight delivers programs designed to make children happy and lift their spirits when they need it most. Starlight brings fun and laughter to children no matter what their illness or where they live.
Starlight programs are delivered both in and out of hospital, providing positive distraction to children and teenagers in their time of need.
Starlight Express Rooms
A haven inside the hospital
The Starlight Express Room is a place where Captain Starlight orchestrates their own brand of fun and mayhem, alongside the latest computer games, movies, crafts and activities.
Kids too ill to leave their beds can join in the fun via the daily Captain Starlight shows broadcast to their bedside TVs.
The Starlight Express Rooms are located in Australia’s major paediatric hospitals providing a medical-free respite for children and their families. These locations include The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, the John Hunter Children’s Hospital in Newcastle, the Princess Margaret Hospital for Children in Perth and Starlight’s newest Starlight Express Room in the Women’s & Children’s Hospital, Adelaide which opened in April 2011.
Starlight Express Rooms are a welcome retreat for brothers and sisters wanting to escape the tedium of waiting around in hospital corridors. Every month we average of 30,000 visits to our rooms and with this demand, need to open more rooms around the country.
“Starlight is a very good example of what miracles are all about. Because of the facilities Starlight provide, our children actually look forward to visiting the hospital for treatment.”
Travelling from Planet Starlight
Captain Starlight’s sole purpose is to bring smiles to sick children by distracting them from their illness and pain using entertainment and engagement.
In the eyes of a child, Captain Starlight is a magical super hero, bringing laughter, games, magic and all kinds of fun activities into their lives. Captain Starlight helps children forget they are chronically unwell.
The team of Starlight Captains work their magic across numerous Starlight programs.
