24th August – 31st August 2019

It will be a great week in the bush!

Starting in Gloucester NSW… a charming country town known as the gateway to the Barrington Tops.  Mount Barrington is an ancient volcano which erupted between 44 and 54 million years ago and covered much of the Barrington Tops plateau, resulting in some of Australia’s finest gemstones such as sapphires and rubies being found in the area.

We then venture through some spectacular countryside with a good mix of roads… of course there will be dirt (and plenty of it), some roads will be tight and windy, we may encounter some sandy obstacles and no doubt we’ll get our long open stretches a well.

Our night stops will be Mudgee, Armidale, Coffs Harbour for lay day, Wauchope, South West Rocks and finishing in Tuncurry, where Wallis Lake meets the Tasman Sea.  Tuncurry is well known for it’s good surfing and enclosed swimming rockpool.

It’s guaranteed to be a ‘Fat’ week with lots of ‘You Beauty’ moments!  So if you want to be part of the weeks action register NOW… spots are limited.

We had the pleasure of handing over a “BIG CHEQUE” for $240,000 to The Starlight Children’s Foundation representative – KT – on Monday 23 October.  That marks the end of the 2017 Trek!  Thanks to the trekkers who came to Newcastle – to the John Hunter Hospital – Starlight Express Room for the presentation.

And so on to 2018!

Fatty has already put in some work to plan out where the 2018 Trek is going – starting on Port Macquarie, going through Tamworth, Tenterfield, Toowoomba, Narrabri (or Moree), Dubbo, and finishing in Goulburn.  This will be from 18 August to 25 August 2018.

Fatty has set a challenge – he will shout beers for the person who comes up with the best NAME and THEME for the Trek!

You can now put in your nominations for the 2018 Trek – just fill in the ‘signup’ form on the tab above       and pay your $500 deposit to secure a place in the Trek.  Make sure you include your preferred car number.  I have already had a few inquiries from people wanting to come next year, so first in – best dressed.

Please note that we have changed the bank account.  We are now banking with the ANZ Bank.  The new numbers are at the bottom of the page.

With this year’s donation, we have now given The Starlight Children’s Foundation a grand total of $1,840,000.  How far above the $2 million mark can we get this year?

We will be having a get-together – called our REUNION TREK – at Goulburn, on 10 March 2018.  Any new trekker should try to get along to that – it gives you a good opportunity to see what trekking is all about.  See you there!

We are now heading towards having a Trek for this year. We will be visiting most of the inland rivers through the week, so we will call it the 2017 Rivers Trek, unless someone comes up with a better suggestion.

The Trek will start on the coast at Nowra, then proceed inland, with the first stop being Canberra – on the Murrumbidgee. Then on to Cobram/Barooga – on the Murray. Next to Mildura – still on the Murray, where we will spend an extra day. On to Renmark in South Australia, via the Murray Sunset National Park – staying with the Murray. We then head east again, alongside the Murray, crossing the Darling, and stopping in Hay – on the Murrumbidgee. The final day sees us getting to Forbes – on the Lachlan. This will all happen from 19 August to 26 August. More information later.

But first – we are having a reunion Trek at Wauchope on 24/25 March. If anyone wants to be involved in that, please send me an email.

Some teaser photos below:

This happy bank of trekkers finished the 2016 Trek in Coffs Harbour, with the result that we are donating a massive $260,000 to The Starlight Children’s Foundation of Australia.

Starlight CEO Louise Baxter said: “Every minute of every day a child is admitted to hospital in Australia and Starlight is there to help them play, laugh and simply be kids again. We wouldn’t be able to do this without community events like Trek4kidz, and for their ongoing support we cannot thank them enough.”

In all, the trekkers covered some 2,840 kilometres in a variety of conditions from Griffith to Coffs Harbour – and all cars made it home!

Keep looking at the website for further news. We will shortly be releasing information about the 2017 Trek, and already there are people lining up to come along.

The 20th Anniversary Trek is about to happen!

We will be travelling from Griffith, through White Cliffs, Cunnamulla, Lightning Ridge, Narrabri, Inverell, finishing at Coffs Harbour. We will start the Trek at Griffith on Saturday 20 August 2016 with our opening function, and finish at Coffs Harbour on the following Saturday, 27 August 2016.

We have had a really good response, with about 40% of people that have signed up being “virgins”, who have not experienced a Trek before. They will have a FAT time!

Funds raised by this year’s Trek will enable The Starlight Children’s Foundation to support many thousands of sick kids in children’s hospitals across Australia. Let’s get behind the trekkers and DONATE. To support your favourite car, navigate to the ‘donate’ tab, find the car number that you want to support, and make your donation. ALL money collected will go to The Starlight Children’s Foundation.

All the people working behind the scenes in Trek4Kidz are volunteers, and no money is used for wages, etc. All the trekkers pay for their own meals and accommodation, so you can be assured that ALL donations find their way to the cause!

While we are travelling around the countryside, we visit schools along the way, helping the children to understand the work that Starlight does to brighten the lives of seriously ill children and their families. Regional communities are wonderful in rallying together in support of those in need, and the community spirit shown for the Trek4Kidz event is wonderful.

Trek4kidz is also grateful for the amazing contribution of the Lions Clubs in all the towns we visit.

If you are interested to join our group, please read the Administration Rules 2016, which will give you an understanding of what we do. This is found on the ‘Sign Up’ page on the website, and then fill in the details and send them in.

We normally limit the number of people coming on the Trek to around 80, but because next year is our 20th anniversary, we decided to open it up. Already I have 100 people signed up, and I am still getting inquiries. We will have to limit the numbers soon, since the accommodation at White Cliffs is limited. All the other towns can handle more, but so that we can get everyone into a bed, I will have to draw the line soon!

STOP PRESS:

We have now reached the limit for people on the 2016 Trek!

If anyone puts in a form now, it will be kept on a wait list, in case anyone drops out.

Thanks for the amazing response!

2015 was our biggest fundraising year to date, with a donation to The Starlight Children’s Foundation of $220,000. That was achieved with 78 people carrying out fundraising. What can we do with over 100 people getting into the spirit? Is $300,000 possible??? Funds raised by next year’s Trek will enable Starlight to support many thousands of sick kids in children’s hospitals across Australia.

The 18th annual Trek4Kidz a great success!

The Bush to Beach Trek took place on the 23rd August leaving Armidale and finished on the 30th August at Woolgoolga. More than 20 cars reved up their engines to commence an epic journey of over 2,500 kilometres travelling on dirt tracks from Armidale to Goondiwindi, Dalby, Hervey Bay (layday) Caboolture, Tenterfield and finish in Woolgoolga, in an effort to brighten the lives of seriously ill children and their families by raising much needed funds for the Starlight Children’s Foundation.

“To see the impact that Starlight’s work has on children, we know how worthwhile the trek is – that’s what keeps us coming back each year. We never tire of visiting local communities and contributing to this worthwhile cause, the generosity of people is pretty amazing.” Trek Director Michelle McDonald says.

Trek4Kidz is an annual week long event travelling through regional NSW and Qld, whilst helping to promote the efforts of Starlight.

Starlight CEO Louise Baxter says,

“Trek4Kidz is a wonderful community fundraiser supporting Starlight children. Everyone involved are completely committed to making Trek4kidz a success, and over the years their efforts have changed the lives of hundreds of Starlight children and their families. On behalf of everyone at Starlight, I cannot thank Trek4Kidz enough for all they help Starlight to achieve. They are absolute stars.”

Saturday 23rd August to 31st August Trek 2014

Do you have friends who own a 2wd or 4wd? Do you want to be part of an adventure and help seriously ill children and their families?

Then the Trek4kidz event is for you!

So if you would like to be part of the 2014 trek and make new friends with the same common interest- meeting people, visiting new and exciting places and most importantly, helping children. If you are looking for a great time, great company and a chance to see our vast country, then join us as we travel from Armidale, Goondiwindi, Dalby, Hervey Bay (layday), Caboolture, Tenterfield and finish in Woolgoolga.

In keeping with the Trek’s ethos, the 2014 trek is not a race. It’s about travelling to remote and beautiful places, with friends, who share your love of the great outdoors. Your involvement will also ensure that seriously ill children receive much needed funding to help them participate in some of life’s experiences that we all take for granted.

The trek is for everyone from couples of all ages to mates and their mates. It is your chance to get your car off the bitumen and onto some of the finest gravel roads around Australia. What does it take to enjoy one of the great charity events?

Here’s the checklist:

  • Time – 23rd August to 31st August
  • A sense of humour
  • A desire to help seriously ill children and their families
  • Fundraising ideas
  • A sense of adventure

The 2014 event requires:-

$500 entry fee per vehicle

$1,000 per person (accommodation and meals)

In addition, each entry pledges to raise a minimum of $1,500 but of course we would like you to raise much more than that to help us reach our fundraising target.

For more information about our trek you can contact the event director Michelle McDonald on 0417 204 850.

Collectively we are able to make a difference in the lives of seriously ill children. Seeing these kids smile is what it’s all about.

I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday season.
We were fortunate enough to be able to spend New Year Eve on Sydney Harbour on a friends yacht, which gave us front row seats for the amazing fireworks!

Well the New Year is definitely upon us and I hope that you are all refreshed and motivated to make this year a fabulous one! We all know it doesn’t take long before things get busy, however a New Year heralds a time to review where you are at and set the direction you want to take forward. A little time planning ahead can make all the difference.

So for those of you that will be coming along on this years trek you had better start your planning for your fundraising activities before time does get away.

Have you put your entry form in?
Have you paid your deposit?

If you have any fundraising ideas you would like to share with other trekkers please send your ideas through to me and I will pass it on. Alternatively if you would like some ideas please let me know also.

As you know we will be having our lay day this year in Tamworth, so if you have any ideas for our fancy dress let me know, given it is Tamworth I thought perhaps it should be something Country? However any ideas I would be open to listening to.

Don’t forget our Trek Reunion in April (26th – 27th) in Goulburn. Anzac Day is on the Thursday the 25th so if you can make it to Goulburn by then you will get the opportunity to play 2 up at the Gordon Hotel. Don’t forget to make your accommodation arrangements as per previous emails. If you could also let me know if you intend on coming that would be great.

This is an excellent opportunity for some of the new trekkers to meet everyone.

Accommodation – contact the Gordon Hotel Phone: (02)4821-4188 or the Lilac City Motor Inn 02 48215000.

Calendars are still available if you wish to purchase one please email or give me a call, they make a great sponsors gift.

Hopefully by now you should have received a DVD of the pics (1 for each car) if you require anymore then that can be arranged by calling the guy on the back of the DVD (at a cost of about $15.00).

Entry Forms – If you haven’t organised to fill in your entry form than please go to the website and do it asap. I need to organise accommodation/meals etc.
Payment is also required.

Feel free to pass this email onto anyone that may be interested in coming along on this years trek.

Regards Michelle

Welcome to the April edition of our newsletter!

Well it sure seems like a distant memory now but the Trek Reunion held in Goulburn in March was a fantastic weekend! So thanks again to the Goulburn and Crookwell crews for organising a great weekend.

Fundraising

Hope you are all well into your fundraising for this year, remember we are not that far away from August, so if you haven’t been seriously working hard to raise MONEY then you had better get cracking.

If you need any ideas or suggestions please give me a call and we can discuss.

General News

Well it has been a great start to my first year as Trek Director! Thanks to the great weather we have been having. We have now had to change the trek route for this year due to bad weather conditions, the roads on which we were to travel are now covered by flood waters. We have left it as long as possible
before we had to make the decision to change the trek. This is most unfortunate, as I know we were all looking forward to the planned route for this year. I for one certainly was! Now for the big job of cancelling all the accommodation and meals that had been booked, and re book all the new ones.

The 2011 Trek will now be:-
Wauchope, Inverell, Conabarabran, Cobar, Broken Hill (layday in Broken Hill) Griffith and finish in Goulburn.

I am sure it will be still a great trek with lots of good roads to cover and some great stops!

Now we have that sorted we can organise to get your door stickers, you will still organise to get your own numbers.

Officials for this year

Could all officials who intend on coming this year and haven’t yet filled out their entry form please do so, it is easy! Just go to the website and go to the sign up and just fill the form out and that will come to me. (thanks). First in is in!

Auction Items

If you are planning to organise some auction items this year along with merchandise for any school visits, could you please let me know.

What I would like to do this year is have a list prepared of any auction items that we have and work out when and where we do the auctions. Same with the merchandise for the school kids bags, I would like to have all those prepacked.

Certificates – Milestones

This year I would like to organise some certificates for long standing trekkers, if you have been involved for 10 consecutive years or more could you please let me know by sending me an email with the details listed as below.

Car Number
Years
First Name
Surname

Merchandise

I would like to organise some trek shirts before the trek this year like the blue ones last year, if you are interested in purchasing a shirt for either yourself or perhaps a sponsor, please let me know. I will be the whole range of merchandise on the website as soon as it is organised.

Message from our treasurer

Just a reminder to ensure that when you bank your money to put your car number on the deposit slip or let Alec know by either email at finance@trek4kidz.com or ring on 026352 5474. If you haven’t paid your entry yet, then you had better get it in real quick!

Entry form on the website

Don’t forget to go to the website and fill out your entry forms!

If you have entered yet you have one 2 weeks to go, I need to confirm accommodation arrangements, so please if you haven’t entered via the website then I don’t know you are going.
www.trek4kidz.com sign up!

Fundraising – Why you do what you do!!

Bailey

Bailey’s Story

At just 6 weeks old Bailey was diagnosed with a serious kidney condition which meant up to 14 doses of medications a day and hospital visits every single week. Sometimes just once or twice a week, sometimes 4-5 times.

Without a doubt, the weekly injections and blood tests were always the days most dreaded. Bailey knew the SECOND a nurse walked in the door what was coming.

Imagine having to watch your child cry in sheer terror every single week.

It was about 3 weeks after Bailey’s sister Kaitlin was born, and roughly 3 months shy of his 3rd Birthday, that Bailey took a bad turn. His kidneys had shut down. Bailey needed a kidney transplant.

The whole family moved into the Hospital – mum Mel and partner Rick, along with baby Kaitlin – with each parent taking it in turns to sleep next to Bailey, or in the parent’s hostel with Kaitlin.

They all spent Christmas day in hospital, with just one wish – that Bailey would be ok.

After a 10 hour operation, with Bailey’s dad donating a kidney, they were confronted by their little boy with what seemed like a million wires and tubes attached to him. Even Dad was wheeled from his operating table to Bailey’s bedside.

But thankfully the news was good, the operation was a success!

BaileyFinally, this Christmas Bailey is a healthy, energetic and playful 4 year old boy, and his family feel they may just have reached the light at the end of the tunnel.

Bailey’s Starlight Wish is to visit Movie World on the Gold Coast – when he sees Movie World on TV
he jumps up and down yelling “mummy, mummy, look, look, look, I want to go to that one!”

You can help grant this very brave little boy’s Starlight Wish and give the whole family a chance to
re-energise, spend some quality time together and just have fun.

Please donate now. It’s because of YOU – and only because of people like YOU – that children’s Starlight Wishes can come true.

Thanks and happy fundraising!

Regards Michelle

Welcome back to all who enjoyed some well deserved time off over Christmas and New Year with the kids! I hope all your children were chomping at the bit to get back to school. We’ll see how they feel after there first month or so and how the grown ups feel when they realise with the passing of Australia Day, perhaps the festive season is well and truly behind us!

Here we are at February already! – The shortest month of the year, but the best month of the year, but the best month!

Don’t forget boys and girls it’s Valentines Day on the 14 February! Not to mention lots of Aquarians getting ready to celebrate their birthdays.

Last year a Prize from Eric from the Sunset Caravan Park at Woolgoolga donated a holiday to Macca for his dedication to the trek over the last 3 years, trekkers then donated money to give to Eric for the holiday, Eric kindly donated all the monies raised back with all the proceeds going to the Kids! “Thank you Eric that was so generous of you”

Well things have been very hectic for me between work and trying to get my head around all I have to do for this years trek “thanks Macca”.

I know there are probably a lot of you guys out there that have some doubts in your mind about a female organising the trek, well can I assure you I work in a male dominated industry, not to mention growing up with seven brothers so trust me I know what you men are like and what your expectations will be, so please don’t stress I will ensure you enjoy this years trek as much as you have done in previous years.

Queensland Devastation and Destruction

We are certainly all shocked after watching the devastation caused by the Queensland floods and Cyclone. It will take months and possibly years before Queensland fully recovers from flooding and the effects of cyclone Yasi. If you wish to contribute to the disaster relief fund see details below.

Account Name: Premiers Disaster Relief Appeal
BSB: 064 013
Account number: 1000 6800

Message from our treasurer

Thank you to all the trekkers who have been sending in their cheques, could you all ensure that when you deposit money can you make sure you put you car number on the deposit slip as a reference. Can you also drop Alec an email or myself so we can ensure we have it allocated to you car.

Remember!! This year the award for the highest fundraiser will be announced on the Saturday night at our opening function. Please ensure that all your funds are banked well before the night to ensure we have a good picture of monies raised. It is too hard to try and bank a heap of money whilst we are on the trek, not only that it is not safe to have money laying around.

Trek Reunion Update

Don’t forget if you haven’t booked your accommodation for the Trek Reunion you better do so. Fatty assures us all of a great reunion! Well done Fatty and the boys from Goulburn and Crookwell. For further details please contact Fatty on 0408 026490.

Forms on the website

You will find the entry forms on the website, if you have any problems please let me know, there is no password anymore so you should be able to just go straight in and fill it out. As we are filling up fast please ensure you do that asap.

Starlight

I have been working with Starlight on an updated version of the MOI and we have just about got it right. Starlight is very grateful for the great work and support that all you trekkers give. So let’s not loose sight of the reason we do this so if you haven’t started your fundraising you had better get moving!

Congratulations!

A baby girl has arrived for our virgin Trekker Damian Blair and his wife Jess, owners of the Star Hotel in Wauchope. Damian is crewing up with Don in car 71 this year replacing me, look out Damian your in for a fast ride!

We also have our first trek baby ready to be born at any time. Steven and Rachel will become parents anytime soon. Good luck!

I would like to take this opportunity to say a “big thankyou” to Macca for all his hard work in organising some great treks over the past three years. I know I have some big shoes to fill!

As a result from everyone’s hard work I am pleased to report that a cheque for $80k has been given to Starlight.

Starlight was overwhelmed, they asked me to pass on their thanks to everyone for contributing in raising this money. There is no doubt the impact that we all play in brightening the lives of seriously ill and hospitalised children as a result of these efforts.

The event would not be possible without YOUR assistance and hard work.

IT IS MOST APPRECIATED! So keep up the good work and get planning for 2011. Let’s see if we can get to $100K next year!

If you have any suggestions for the 2011 Trek, then I would love to hear from you.

HAVE YOU SENT OUT YOUR THANKYOU CERTIFICATES??

Trek Reunion

Have you got the date in your diary? 12 March 2011
Further details in November’s newsletter.

Message from the treasurer

I would like to mention that it is really good to see that people are already claiming their place in next year’s trek by putting in their deposits – we already have deposits (or partial deposits) from 8 cars.

Can you please remember that if any money is deposited into the bank, please send me an email letting me know.

Our experience last year is that even if money is deposited with a reference number, sometimes that reference number does not come through – so an email would be good insurance.

Cheers, Alec

Fundraising Tips

Donations
Sponsorships are often confused with donations. A donation is just that a gift of a product or cash with little or not expected return. The definition of a donation is “free money” with no strings attached, and no return benefits or favours expected.

Sponsorship
If you are seeking sponsorship you have to remember that you need to provide tangible benefits in exchange of the cash. It is very important to distinguish between these two fundraising benefits.

The golden rules of selling sponsorships :-
Offer an opportunity – demonstrate what you can do for your sponsor. Target the right companies with the right target audience fit.

Have the right package in terms of
1. Benefit
2. Realistic pricing
3. Have creditability
4. Be professional
5. Be persistent but not a pest.
6. Offer an opportunity not a problem
7. Always acknowledge your sponsors where ever you can

Start at least twelve months before an event if you are seeking any kind of substantial sponsorship. It can take some sponsors months to make a decision and they usually need at least six months to get their leverage program together before the event.

This is for your benefit, as well as the sponsors’. If you get knocked back, you need to have enough time to source another sponsor.

Don’t ever think that once you’ve got the cheque your job is done. If you don’t service sponsors properly, they won’t support you again.

If you have any questions or want to run any ideas past me Please either email or call me.

If you would like to have any special dates put on the website
Please email details to me.

Happy fundraising!

Regards

Michelle

As this will be my last last newsletter I would like to take the opportunity to thank you all for your support during my time as Director – I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in this role and have taken great satisfaction from seeing you all have a great time, and of course seeing the $$$ benefits for your hard work.

Thanks to Michelle and the committee for accepting the responsibility of planning next years trek and guiding Trek4Kidz in what seems to be a promising future.

Organising the Trek is a big job and as the saying goes “Many hands make light work”, so if you able to offer any assistance with any planning etc – please do not hesitate to contact Michelle or anyone else on the committee and discuss your thoughts. The more that can help the easier it becomes for everybody.

Can I please remind you all to continue to check out the web page – especially the photos (I am slowly getting them all up) and also the sign on page for the 2011 trek. It is such an enormous help to get these details in ASAP.

G’day trekkers – getting very close now and time is running out for you to get your cars prepared for this years trek. A reminder that the following items need to be completed ASAP.

Each and all of these are very important.

1. Get your memberships fees paid. For the many of you that haven’t – this can be deposited directly into our bank account via direct deposit or PayPal on our website.
2. Start putting your fundraising $$$$$ in the bank.
3. Read the scrutineering checklist and ensure your car is adequately prepared.
4. Contact the accommodation in Merimbula should you require an additional nights accommodation. – Details of the accommodation are in the information and forms section of our website.
5. Inform me of any food allergies or dietary requirements.
6. Get your entry forms in – Yes there are still some “slackas” out there.
7. Get your show bag and auction items from your sponsors – very important this year as we will need 500 show bags. These items will be packed into show bags on the Saturday in Merimbula at Scrutineering.
8. Login to our website and read the information – if you or a team member cannot access the website please email me and I can check your user name and password.
9. Keep fundraising and ensure you re-visit those businesses and people who are thinking about donating to you.
10. MOST importantly – Get Excited!!

All these items have been mentioned over previous newsletter so if you are unsure check them first and then if you are still unsure contact me.

Very shortly I will place a merchandise order form on the website so you will be able to pre-order items such as clothing prior to this years trek. Presently we are working on our online shop but just in case it won’t be ready I will get you to return the order forms via fax or post.

Over the next couple of months I will post reminders and information as it comes to hand on the website so please remember to check it regularly to keep well-informed.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me via email or phone.

Good luck with all your fundraising and see you all in 58 days.

Cheers

Macca

Trek Updates

As you will notice this update has not been emailed out to you. All information you require will be posted on the website so it would be a great idea if you bookmark the new site and checked it regularly for updates. If I have important/urgent information an email may be sent out as a reminder.

Website

Our new website has been launched! This website has been designed and constructed with the aim to make communication and transactions easier between trekkers and administration. The website has, and will have features that allows each of you to access all forms and trek information that are required to participate, view photos and videos and the Pay pal feature allows sponsors, businesses to make donations and for you to pay your membership fees.

Once fully completed each of you will get a login and password to access the member’s only section. This section will have more detailed information about the years trek as well as access to photos etc from previous years.

As always I would value your thoughts and comments about the new website especially if you see a possibility for improvement to make communication between all parties more effective.

Please take note that the following in regards to email changes.
Event Director: info@trek4kidz.com
(Ian Macaulay – NB: you can still use ian@trek4kidz.com for a while)
Treasurer: finance@trek4kidz.com (Alec McNiven)
Media: media@trek4kidz.com (Michelle McDonald)

Entry Forms

I am still waiting for entry forms from a few cars! It is important to planning that I receive all entry forms. I will email Trekkers whose forms I have not received, it would be greatly appreciated if all forms can be returned to me without delay. I am placing orders next week for your shirts – if you have not returned information to me, I cannot Guarantee that the shirt I order for you will fit.

Finance News

Recently each of you received an invoice for this year’s membership fees. These fees are due ASAP and can be paid by the following methods.
1. Website – Pay Pal account
2. Cheque – sent to Event Director – PO Box 2400 Graceville East 4075
3. Direct Deposit – use Bendigo bank details contained in this update.
Your cooperation and prompt payment for this amount is greatly appreciated and enables me to continue planning.
As previously mentioned, if you have an issue in regards to the prompt of your fees, please contact me ASAP and we can discuss an alternate arrangement.

Insurance and Drivers Licence

Just a reminder that it is the responsibility of each car to ensure that your registration, driver’s license and insurances are up-to-date. Trek4kidz affects no public liability insurance for the event and reminds each trekker that they enter this event at their own risk.

Scrutineering Checklist Updated

Please note that the following has been added to the scrutineering checklist.
1. First Aid kit.

In previous years I have supplied each car with a basic first aid kit for use during the trek. With such a large numbers of trekkers in 2010 I need to purchase an addition 20 First aid kits at a cost of approx $800.

Could each car ensure that a basic first aid kit is added to your list of things to do? I will have some spare first aid kits on the trek should you be unable to purchase one.

Thanks for your help.

Starlight Express Room Visit in Melbourne

We have been given the opportunity whilst in Queenscliff to visit the Starlight Express Room in Melbourne. This will be perfect opportunity for those trekkers who have not experienced the ins and outs of an express room and see first hand the wonderful activities they provide for children and their families whilst in hospital.

A time has been confirmed between 10.00am and 11.00am on Wednesday 25th August for the 20 Trekkers only. The captains will be providing morning tea show a DVD and talk about the daily activities they provide etc.

If you wish to visit the hospital please email or call me ASAP. The first 20 in will be able to go.

Merchandise orders

Very shortly (for members only) you will be able to order Trek4Kidz merchandise directly from our website. This merchandise has been supplied with the aim to assist you in fundraising in your local communities and includes things like stubby holders, pens, key rings, water bottles etc. If you have another fundraising idea that has not been mentioned please contact me and I will investigate it through our suppliers.

I am hoping that this section will be operating within a fortnight.

Accommodation Requirements

In previous years some trekkers have opted to arrive at our staring venue on either the Thursday or Friday prior to the beginning of the trek. For those who wish to arrive early please note the following: – It is your responsibility to book and pay for extra nights prior to the beginning of the trek. Your membership fee only covers the Saturday evenings accommodation at this venue. Details for the accommodation venue at Merimbula are:

The Black Dolphin Motel and Apartments
Arthur Kaine Drive Merimbula
Ph: 02 64951500 Fax: 02 64951207
www.blackdolphin .com.au
NB: It is advisable to make contact sooner rather than later to confirm a room. You are also welcome to choose another venue for the additional night/s should it be more convenient.

Bowls Day

Will be coming up in June and July also – more information about this event next newsletter

If you are having a function in your local area and would like everybody to know about it and hopefully get other trekkers to attend– please send me the details and I will add it to our updates.

Also we would all love to hear how your function went ! It is great to celebrate your achievements as a group.

Let’s get busy!

The trek is only 122 days away and it time now to ramp things up in regards to your fundraising and car preparation. Congrats to Car 73 who was given a $5000.00 donation two weeks ago and Car 54 for $2000 worth of donations – excellent responses for your efforts. Keep it up – the more $ the better.

Fundraising in your local communities can be very rewarding and surprisingly easy if you are prepared and have a plan/goal in mind. Here are some common and easy fundraising ideas you may like to try.
*Cadbury Chocolates
*Car wash
*Auctions
* Car sponsorship (business logo on car)
* Golf/Bowls Days
* Rubber Duck Races
* BBQ’s
* Head Shave Days
* Raffles
* Biggest Loser Competitions.

Tip: Always follow up leads and be realistic about what you are after. Businesses are doing it tough at the moment so offering them an option that suits the current climate will generally be more successful. And, don’t forget to thank them via a letter and a certificate once the donation is received.

Please contact me should you require any additional information or ideas in regards to these ideas.
Remember the better planned you are, the better overall result – Good Luck and let’s get busy!

Entries

Entries are now closed! Thank you to all the trekkers who have responded to my requests in previous newsletters and are returned all the forms required to enter the trek. Please find included in this newsletter a list of trekkers and officials for the year. You will notice that some car #’s have an asterix (*) next to it, this indicates that I require more information from you. If you are unsure about the missing information, please contact me and I will let you know what it is. If there is an error in the list please contact me urgently so I can adjust the database accordingly.

Thank you to those trekkers who have begun depositing your donations into our account. Remember that each of you are required to pay your $1000.00 membership contributions prior to the trek, this money covers the cost of all meals (except lay day) and all your accommodation for the week. Very shortly each of you will be receiving an invoice for this amount and it would be appreciated if it could be paid ASAP. If for some reason you are unable to pay please contact me to make another arrangement.

Fun Centre Upgrades

In 2009 part of our donations were allocated towards the upgrade of Fun Centres in regional hospitals where our trekkers are based. The two hospitals – Goulburn and Tweed have already had these installed so if you wish to recognise this via media in your communities please contact me and we can discuss your options.

Van Update

Over the coming weeks out two vans will be sign-written for this years trek. A big thanks to D’art Designs for our van wraps but also to “Stickers” at Stickerman Signs in Coffs for his time and effort in preparing the vinyl.

See tables and other info inside the PDF.

2010 Trek

Two weekends ago 4 of us set off to plan for this years’ trek. The following route has been confirmed.
Saturday 21st August – Merimbula for scrutineering, trekker briefing and opening function.
Sunday 22nd August – Merimbula to Lakes Entrance via Cann River for Lunch
Monday 23rd August – Lakes Entrance to Phillip Island – lunch stop TBA
Tuesday 24th August – Phillip Island to Queenscliffe via the Mornington Peninsula and ferry to Queenscliffe – Lunch at Queenscliffe School
Wednesday 25th August – Layday in Queenscliffe
Thursday 26th August – Queenscliffe to Port Fairy – Lunch at Apollo Bay
Friday 27th August – Port Fairy to Horsham – Lunch stop at Penola School in SA.
Saturday 28th August – Horsham to Deniliquin – Lunch Stop at Quambatook

This year the roads are fantastic – some of the best that I have ever been on and they will provide you with a great variety of hills and flats that will test you’re driving ability.

A big thanks to Fatty, Chicken Legs and Graeme for their time in assisting me set the trek.

Car Preparations

As mentioned this years trek offers a variety of roads – it is important that you prepare your car well for the adventure.

Please pay particular attention to your;
1. Tyres
2. Radiator
3. Bash plates

These will al be carefully checked at scrutineering to ensure that your car will go the distance.

If you have any questions regarding your car preparations please contact me.

Trek Reunion

By now most of you would have received information in regards to our Reunion in Wauchope in March. It
is extremely important that if you plan on attending this excellent event that you contact Michelle
McDonald and let her know ASAP as catering will need to be planned and confirmed. Thanks to all the
crew in Wauchope who have assisted Don and Michelle put this weekend together.

Donation and Entry:

Cheques need to be made out to Trek4kidz.inc and sent to me for banking. You will receive a
receipt soon after. Some business/sponsors may wish to donate their money directly to
Starlight Foundation if this is the case please ensure that these cheques are posted to me
and I will pass them on. A receipt from Starlight will be issued to the company and sent to your
address for passing on.

Sponsors

January and February are usually great times to get out and start chasing sponsors – many businesses etc are ‘cashed up’ after a big Christmas and are more willing to part with money or goods. If you require sample sponsorship letters please let me know and I will forward you a copy.

V2

Last weekend some of us travelled to Woolgoolga to complete the restoration of our second van. Thanks to Neil and Ursula Currall for their hospitality and use of their facilities and thanks to Trev, Harry, Don, Michelle, Mud Guts, John, Max and Pam for their help. The van looks great!

Donation Tin Label

This week I purchased a $2 money tin form a “Cheap” store and placed a Trek4Kidz label on it
for use at functions etc. these are a great way to get donations at local events and businesses. I
have attached a label for you to use or modify should you wish.

Show bags Merchandise

This year we are looking at getting more efficient on the way we handle and plan for our school and hospital visits. To assist us with this we require your help! We are hoping that you are able to assist by sending your showbag merchandise to Michelle McDonald prior to our Trek so as she can prepare and pack the required amount of bags.

Michelle’s Contact Details are as follows:
Email: michelle.mcdonald@countryenergy.com.au
Phone: 0417204850
Address: 24 Narran River Road Kings, Creek Wauchope NSW 2446
Should you have a large amount of showbag items please contact her and an alternate delivery option may
be available
Thanks for your help.

Banking your money

Most of you are well underway in your fundraising drives and to date we have received some good
sponsorship dollars. To help us plan and prepare for the trek it is important that you deposit your money
into our account as soon as you receive it.

Remember that all deposits must be referenced on your deposit slips or direct credit – this can be done by adding your car # to the appropriate field. If depositing at a branch please double check that they
include the reference number, sometimes they forget. Presently I am required to pay accommodation
deposits and it really helps if I have some $$ in the bank – so please help.

Door Stickers

Door stickers will be posted out next week to those trekkers who have paid their nomination fee of $300. If you have not yet paid your deposit please do so so that I can send these out and you can start promoting your cause within and around your community.

If you are unable to pay your nomination please let me know and we can make alternate arrangements.

Food Requirements

As meal planning has commenced it is important that you inform me of any special dietary requirements that you may have. Should I not receive any notification I will assume you can eat what the majority will
be having.
