Starlight Cheque Presentation

A very proud moment for Trek4kidz presenting a cheque to the Starlight Children’s Foundation for an amazing $220,000 on Monday 28th September at the Starlight Express Room at the John Hunter Hospital.

Trek4kidz media officer Michelle McDonald said: “To see the impact Starlight’s work has on sick children, teenagers and their families, we know how worthwhile the trek is – that’s what keeps us coming back each year”.

We would also like to give a big thank you to all our sponsors and supporters. Without your support we couldn’t do it!

“Starlight CEO Louise Baxter said: “Starlight is absolutely thrilled that in their 19th year Trek4Kids raised $220k which will grant more than 30 life changing Starlight Wishes, and support seriously ill kids and their families in hospitals in NSW. Trek4Kidz is a wonderful community fundraiser and everyone involved is committed to making the annual Trek a successful and amazing event! Trek4Kidz goes from strength to strength each year and their continued support to Starlight is truly inspiring. Every minute of every day a child is admitted to hospital in Australia and Starlight is there to help them to play, laugh and simply be kids again. On behalf of everyone at Starlight, a huge thank you to Trek4Kidz for their continued support and commitment to helping sick kids and their families when they need it the most.”

Trek4kidz will be leaving on Sunday morning the 23 August from Mudgee on this year’s “Fossickers Drive” trek with over 25 cars they will travel over 2,800 klm, travelling to Temora, Swan Hill, Bendigo where the cars will take a well-deserved break, and then continue to Beechworth, Yass, and will see the finish at Bathurst on Saturday 29 August.

Established in 1997, by a small band of like-minded people from Tuross Head on the far south coast of NSW who decided to organise an event that would not only help change the lives of seriously ill children, but would provide a social event for people who share the drive and ambition for charity work & a keen interest in exploring the great Australian countryside and meeting the many characters our country boasts. Since its inception the trek has visited more than 420 towns, 60 schools and raised over $1,150,000 for the Starlight Children’s Foundation. www.starlight.org.au which has helped nearly 30,000 sick kids and their families access Starlight’s hospital programs including Captain Starlight and the Starlight Express Room.

The cars will participate in creating awareness and raising funds along the way to help Starlight, Australia’s broadest-reaching children’s charity, continue to brighten the lives of seriously ill children and their families.

Funds raised by this year’s Trek will enable Starlight to support over 3000 sick kids for one year in children’s hospitals across NSW.

Trek4kidz media officer Michelle McDonald said: “To see the impact Starlight’s work has on sick children, teenagers and their families, we know how worthwhile the trek is – that’s what keeps us coming back each year”.

“We never tire of visiting local communities and contributing to this worthwhile cause. Regional communities are wonderful in rallying together in support of those in need, and the community spirit shown for the Trek4Kidz event is no exception.“Trek4kidz is grateful for the contribution of the Lions Clubs in all the towns we visit; their ongoing support is invaluable to us.”

Starlight CEO Louise Baxter said: “Every minute of every day a child is admitted to hospital in Australia and Starlight is there to help them play, laugh and simply be kids again. We wouldn’t be able to do this without community events like Trek4kidz, and for their ongoing support we cannot thank them enough. Trek4Kidz goes from strength to strength each year and their continued commitment to Starlight is truly inspiring.”

The 16th annual Trek4Kidz took place 18-25 August 2012 and saw 50 people brave dirt tracks as they travelled from Cessnock to Griffith to help transform the lives of seriously ill kids and their families by raising $95,000.

Trek4Kidz is an annual week-long event where a group explores different regional areas of the Australian countryside by car. Starting in 1997, the trek has visited more than 300 towns, 35 schools and raised $1,045,000 for the Starlight Children’s Foundation.

These funds would enable Starlight to grant 160 life-changing wishes or transform the hospital experience for 28,243 sick children at hospitals around Australia, including John Hunter Children’s Hospital.

This year’s trekkers will be presenting the raised funds to Captain Starlight on Wednesday 31st October at 1.30pm at the Starlight Express Room at John Hunter Children’s Hospital.

Trek Director Michelle McDonald said: “Regional communities are wonderful in rallying together in support of those in need and the community spirit shown for the Trek4Kidz event is no exception.”

“As a result of the current economic climate, fundraising is becoming increasingly challenging, sadly the numbers of seriously ill children will not decline so that’s why we are proud to support the Starlight Children’s Foundation.”

“We never tire of visiting the local communities and contributing to this worthwhile cause – the generosity of people is pretty amazing”

Starlight CEO Louise Baxter said: “Thanks to the generosity of supporters like Trek4Kidz, Starlight transforms the hospital experience with innovative programs designed to enhance a child’s total wellbeing and resilience, and give back their childhood.”

Starlight programs are integral to the total care of seriously ill children and young people – while health professionals focus on treating the illness, Starlight is there to lift the spirits of the child, giving them the opportunity to laugh and play and be a child again.
